Work hungry flood to Fresh Produce Terminal

For Immediate Release - 19 August, 2008

More than 2,500 people have applied for the initial 40 jobs being offered by the new fresh produce terminal currently under construction in the Port of Liverpool.

As the steel work went up on the £6 million facility, Liverpool Produce Terminal staged a Recruitment Open Day at the city centre Adelphi Hotel.

Go-Associates Ltd, operators of the facility, were overwhelmed by the response. Said the Terminal's General Manager, Eamon Lynch: "The support and enthusiasm in and around Liverpool for the project is staggering."

More than 1,500 people flooded through the doors between 9.30am and 5pm with a further 1,000 application packs posted out to eager enquirers. "And more enquiries are still coming in," said Mr Lynch. "The quality of the people who turned up on the day was tremendous – people from all walks of life, all ages and varied backgrounds, but all wanting to be part of this exciting project. Choosing the initial team will be no easy task."

Go-Associates recruited Marvell Training and Development Limited to organise and manage the Open Day in a unique collaboration with Jobcentre Plus and other organisations. Said Marvell's Executive Director Margaret Caffrey: "The turn-out proved just how much people in Liverpool want to work. It was tremendous."

The 90,000 sq ft produce terminal at Royal Seaforth Dock is expected to eventually employ some 100 permanent and supplemental staff. It is expected to begin operation in October, initially targeting the Spanish fruit season and the fresh produce trundled across Europe on 300 trucks arriving in Britain every day.

Said Go-Associates' Operations Director Andy Rickard: "The situation cries out for high volume direct delivery by sea. Instead of a daily convoy of trucks each carrying just 26 pallets of produce, a ship with up to 5,000 pallets on board can be discharged at the new Liverpool terminal in 24 hours. And the Port's location is ideal for rapid distribution to any part of this vast market of 30 million people in the North of the UK, all within a truck driver's tachograph day."
